Samsung HL-R5078W Review
October 26th, 2005Filed Under: Home Theater Reviews, Rear Projection

I noticed Crutchfield has a review of Samsung’s DLP 50″ rear projection 1080p HDTV set.
Features include “dynamic iris” which helps with the blacks, OTA and cable HD tuners, 2 HDMI inputes, and 2 firewire ports.
Street prices are currently starting around $2600.
“Samsung hit the nail on the head
The HL-R5078W does so many things so well that it’s hard to come up with even minor complaints. (OK, it would be nice if the remote control was backlit, but that’s about it.) It combines hot technology (1080p resolution, dynamic iris), high-performance HD tuners for over-the-air and cable signals, plus the connections you need to enjoy current (and future) high-definition sources. ”

I have read a comparison that seems to like the Mitsu better. Although, the Samsung does seem to rate higher than the Toshiba. What I have NOT been able to find, however, is a review that compares any of these televisions to the Sony SXRD. I can say that I did have the opportunity to view the Mitsu and the Sony in the same showroom and the Sony did seem to have the better picture. Better definition, better color, the whole 9 yards. But, I don’t know how they were set up and who might have been messing with the settings. That’s why I’d really like to see a performance review directly comparing the 1080p sets on the market right now.

Yeah, it’s tough to find comparisons of specific models. All we can really do is compare in the store, and compare reviews online.
And just like you’ve stated, stores rarely calibrate their sets, if ever.
If the feature sets are comparable or both do what you need, you have to use the reviewers’ judgement and your own guesswork in the retail store.
When in the store, verify what the source is and make sure it’s the same on both sets. If both are on the same source and it’s a true HD source, if one is easily outshining the other, I would weigh that in.
Also, on this set’s bigger 67-inch brother, Cnet found a problem with the Dynamic Iris. Check out the details here:

I’m not sure if that’s a problem with this set, or if you can turn the DI off. Something to consider though.
Whichever set you purchase, please come back and comment on your tthoughts.

I just saw this on techbargains.com, the tv is down to $1700 which is really good for a 1080p set
