Microsoft Xbox 360

xbox 360 reviewWell, the Xbox 360 launch has come and gone. While many scramble around to try and grab their own 360, a few hundred thousand of us have been able to score one. I got lucky Monday of last week, and haven’t had much to say here since – I’ve been busy playing! Yeah well, Christmas came early for Home Theater Dude, what can I say?

Anyway, Home Theater Mag wrote a quick piece about the new console and a few of the games. It’s a decent read for HT buffs if you don’t already know the score on this next-gen piece of HD gaming goodness.

By the way, if you haven’t been able to find a 360 yet, there are some shipment dates and other info at Xbox 360 Maniac. I followed the recommendations for Target and was able to get one last week, as the store opened.

More Xbox 360s Are Coming

xbox 360 console
According to microsoft, more xbox 360s are on their way. Hmmm, have we heard this before? I guess it’s only been a bit over a week since launch… but still.

Come on MS, where are those 360s!!

“We are shipping units constantly (we have chartered 747’s regularly flying in with units). Some retailers have a backorder wait list, and might not have units that will be on shelf for some time, and some retailers might allocate more units to one store over another, but all stores that have placed orders are getting replenishments regularly.

In fact, we have confirmation that units are on the ground and on their way to retailers this week. When those will go from our warehouses to retailer warehouses, then to retailer locations is largely up to those retailers, so there’s no easy way to say which store will get product on which day. You should call your local retailer to find out. We remain on track to ship 2.75 to 3.0 million consoles in the first 90 days.”

It’s interesting we don’t get any numbers for how many have shipped, or shipped this week.

Call of Duty 2 Xbox 360 Review Roundup

call of duty 2 xbox 360
The top war game on the xbox 360 has earned some high marks on the reviews front.

Check them out:

1UP – 9.0 Outstanding
Call of Duty 2 [is] the complete package. Online and off you get swept up in visceral thrills as good as any summer blockbuster movie. And like those, you won’t come away impressed by its thought-provoking drama or brilliant character portrayal…but you will have a big smile on your face. Review

GamePro – 5.0/5
Frankly put, Call of Duty 2 is simply breathtaking. The game runs standard in 720p with strikingly realistic detail on weapons and walls, emphasized by normal mapping, exceptional shading and lighting, specular highlights, and some absolutely phenomenal particle effects. Review

GameSpot – 8.8 Great
Call of Duty 2 is just about everything you’d hope for and expect from a next-generation first-person shooter. Its varied campaign, excellent sound and gameplay design, and generally good AI make it a worthy successor to the original game on the PC. Review

NextLevel Gaming – 92/100
This is a must-have game, bottom line. Unless you so despise shooters that you’re willing to buy every other launch title but this simply because it’s an FPS, you must pick this up when you get your system on Tuesday. Review

TeamXbox – 9
Judging by the overall package of Call of Duty 2, the Xbox 360 will have a long life as the alternative to high-end PC gaming. Infinity Ward has created a PC game for the 360 (with better graphics than the PC version to boot) and managed to include not only next-gen sounds and graphics, but also gameplay features that were basically impossible on the old hardware. Review

This title definitely looks like a winner. War is one of my favorite genres, I can’t wait to get my paws on this one.

Halo and Halo 2 Much Improved on Xbox 360

Both Halo and Halo 2 get special treatment on the next gen xbox 360. They will both be widescreen, 720p, with full Anti-Aliasing (less jaggies).

Here is a quic comparison:

halo and halo 2 original vs xbox 360

This is awesome! The first Halo wasn’t even widescreen, and that sucked. Now we get both versions pumped up to HD quality – good job Bungie!

Xbox 360: Popular Science’s Top Home Entertainment Innovation 2005

xbox 360 Popular Science names Xbox 360 the best of what’s new in home entertainment 2005, one of twelve categories for the best of what’s new. The December issue is due out in about a week.

“The first of the next-generation gaming consoles, the new Xbox 360 is not just about games — the 360 is poised to take over the living room as well. The 360 is the first Media Center extender that receives and plays back HDTV from Media Center PCs, and it comes with a free lifetime subscription to the Xbox Live online service.”

Looks like they missed the details about live subscriptions, but hey, they are mainstream media after all. You can’t expect too much. 😉

I do think they picked a fine product. But, of course, I could be biased…
